Rome has two airports — Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA) — and they are very different. It is not only about which is closer: the airlines, the type of flights, the connections and the convenience all change. Here is how to weigh them up, with figures updated to 2026.
The two airports in numbers
| Feature | Fiumicino (FCO) | Ciampino (CIA) |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from centre | 32 km (south-west) | 15 km (south-east) |
| Drive time | ~45 min | ~30 min |
| Role | intercontinental hub | low-cost airport |
| Main airlines | ITA, scheduled, low-cost | Ryanair, Wizz Air |
| Direct train to centre | Yes (Leonardo Express) | No |
| Terminals | 1 and 3, large | single, small |
Fiumicino «Leonardo da Vinci»: the big hub
Fiumicino is Italy's leading airport and Rome's intercontinental gateway:
- Scheduled, intercontinental and low-cost flights, with large terminals 1 and 3
- Direct Leonardo Express train to Termini in 32 minutes, plus the FL1 regional line
- More services: dining, lounges, car hire, transfer desks
- It sits 32 km from the centre, linked by the A91 motorway and the GRA ring road
This is the airport for those arriving from afar or on scheduled carriers, and for anyone who wants the direct train into town.
Ciampino «Pastine»: the low-cost airport
Ciampino is Rome's older airport, now dedicated mainly to low-cost traffic:
- A base for Ryanair and Wizz Air, with a single compact terminal
- Closer to the centre (15 km) and often quicker to clear on arrival
- No direct train from the airport: you use the shuttle buses to Termini (about €6, 40 minutes) or the bus to Ciampino station or to the Anagnina terminus of Metro line A
- Linked to the centre via Via Appia Nuova and Via Tuscolana
This is the airport for low-cost flyers: closer, but with the last stretch into the centre left for you to arrange.
Connections to the centre compared
From Fiumicino:
- Leonardo Express: €14 per person, 32 minutes, direct to Termini only
- FL1 regional train: €8 per person, stops at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tiburtina
- Fixed-rate taxi: €55 per car within the Aurelian Walls
- Private transfer: from €55 per car, door to door
From Ciampino:
- Shuttle bus: about €6 per person to Termini
- Fixed-rate taxi: €40 per car within the Aurelian Walls
- Private transfer: from €45 per car, door to door
- No direct train from the airport
Which is better: it depends on the flight, not the distance
In most cases you do not «choose» the airport: your airline does. But if you have several flights to pick between, here is the rule:
- Intercontinental or scheduled flights: almost always Fiumicino
- Ryanair or Wizz Air: often only Ciampino
- You want the direct train into town: Fiumicino, for the Leonardo Express
- You want the shortest hop and arrive at awkward hours: Ciampino with a private transfer
Ciampino is closer: does it really matter?
On paper Ciampino wins: 15 km against 32. But distance alone is misleading. From Fiumicino the Leonardo Express puts you at Termini in a clean half hour; from Ciampino, with no direct train, the last stretch is all on you, between shuttle and connections. A private transfer cancels the difference: from both airports it takes you door to door at a fixed price, and Fiumicino's extra 17 km barely move the final figure.
What if I arrive at one and leave from the other?
This happens with open-jaw flights or poorly matched connections. Fiumicino and Ciampino are about 40 km apart, reached via the GRA ring road in 50–70 minutes depending on traffic. By public transport it means crossing the whole of Rome with two changes; an airport-to-airport private transfer solves it in a single ride, handy if you have luggage or little margin between the two flights.
The practical rule
- Follow the flight: in 90% of cases the airline decides the airport
- Fiumicino: direct train, more services, further out
- Ciampino: closer, low-cost, no direct train
- In both cases the private transfer takes you door to door at a fixed price
Services and comfort on the ground
The two airports offer a different experience inside the terminal too:
- Fiumicino: a wide choice of dining, shops, lounges, car hire and transfer desks; walking times are longer because of the size
- Ciampino: a single compact terminal, essential services but a quick exit after landing
If you like arriving in a relaxed way, shopping or waiting in a lounge, Fiumicino is better equipped. If you just want to land and get out quickly after a low-cost flight, Ciampino's compactness works in your favour.
Night arrivals: which copes better
Awkward hours are common on low-cost flights, and public connections thin out precisely at night:
- At Fiumicino the Leonardo Express does not cover the small hours and the metro is closed
- At Ciampino the shuttle buses follow the last flights, but at reduced frequency
- In both cases, deep at night, the taxi runs on the meter with surcharges, and the private transfer stays the only price already fixed
For a late landing, having a driver waiting regardless of the hour is the advantage that weighs most.
When the choice is really yours
Sometimes you can choose: the same European destination is served by a flight to Fiumicino and one to Ciampino, at similar times and prices. In that case weigh three things: where you are staying in Rome, how much luggage you carry and what time you land. If you are near Termini and travel light by day, the Leonardo Express from Fiumicino is unbeatable. If you land late, carry suitcases or stay far from the station, Ciampino's distance advantage plus a door-to-door transfer gets you there sooner and with fewer steps.
With luggage or as a family: the factor that flips everything
The number of passengers and bags changes the verdict more than distance does. The Leonardo Express and the shuttle buses charge per person and drop everyone at the same terminus: for four people with suitcases the bill climbs and the last stretch to the hotel is still yours to cover, luggage in tow. A private transfer is priced per vehicle and takes you to the address: from Fiumicino or Ciampino the 17-km difference barely moves the price, while you cut out transfers, changes and waiting. For families, groups and heavily loaded travellers, door to door wins regardless of which airport it is.
