Pantheon

The best-preserved temple

The domed oculus, a marvel of Roman engineering.

The Pantheon is the best-preserved building of ancient Rome, a temple dedicated to all the gods and rebuilt by Hadrian in the 2nd century AD over Agrippa's earlier structure. It holds the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome, with a central oculus that lights the interior, and today it is a church housing the tombs of Raphael and the kings of Italy. It stands on Piazza della Rotonda, in the pedestrian heart of the city, easy to include in a walking tour of the center.
