Appia Antica
About the destination
Begun in 312 BC, the Via Appia Antica was the most important road of the Roman Republic, linking the capital to the south of Italy and earning the title 'Regina Viarum', Queen of Roads. Today its first miles form a protected regional park where you can walk or cycle the original basalt paving between the tombs of noble families, ruined mausoleums and rows of umbrella pines. Beneath the road lie the great Christian catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano, kilometres of underground galleries. Grand villas and event venues line the surrounding countryside, making the Appia a favourite for weddings and countryside stays a short hop from the airport.
About the route

Travel tips
Know before you go
