Ostia
About the destination
Ostia Antica was the harbour city that fed ancient Rome, and its ruins rival Pompeii for atmosphere while drawing a fraction of the crowds. Wander the Decumanus Maximus past warehouses, apartment blocks, taverns with intact counters, a marble theatre and the mosaic-floored Square of the Corporations. A short distance on, Lido di Ostia is Rome's own seaside — a long sandy shore of bathing establishments, promenades and trattorias where Romans flock in summer. Together they make Ostia a rewarding change of pace, close to Fiumicino and the water.
